It’s that time of year again. Just as this week brings the official start of summer, it also brings us to the best time of the year for the Boston Harbor Islands. The Boston Harbor Island Alliance is kicking things off with a free ferry day on Tuesday, June 19th. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors are invited to take ferries to either Georges Island or Spectacle Island at no cost. Tickets will be available at Boston’s Best Cruises Long Wharf-North Ferry Center. Be sure to arrive early, as demand for tickets is high and you can’t reserve them in advance!
If you don’t feel like battling the crowds at the free ferry day, don’t worry. The summer season starts Friday, July 22nd, which means ferries will be running more frequently and programming on the islands picks up! Participate in island yoga, listen to jazz music performed by Berklee students, or chow down at a sunset clambake–the options are endless. Best of all, you’ll be able to check out the newly re-opened Peddocks Island! You can explore Peddocks on your own, but we suggest signing up for the July 1st walking tour of the island hosted by Christopher Klein, author of Discovering the Boston Harbor Islands. The tour will cover Peddocks’ history and will take a look at the recent changes to island, including the preservation and rehabilitation of Fort Andrews, a new visitor’s center, and the introduction of great new amenities for island-hoppers. For more on Peddocks Island, see Chris’s guest post on the ever popular Mass Finds blog!
Just days after Free Ferry Day is the 2012 Boston Harbor Island Alliance Gala, a truly unique event that has party-goers wining and dining inside historic Fort Warren. The gala, which takes place on Thursday, June 21st from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m., will feature cocktails, entertainment, and a sunset dinner. Register online to attend, and don’t forget to wear your best “island chic” outfit!
As always, we suggest that island-goers (novices and experts alike) bring along a copy of Discovering the Boston Harbor Islands. The guide is an indispensable resource for planning your visit and offers a ton of useful and fascinating information about each of the islands in Boston Harbor.
See you on the islands!
