UPP Pick of the Week: Peddocks Island Tour on July 1st!

Join Christopher Klein, author of Discovering the Boston Harbor Islands, on a walking tour of the newly revitalized Peddocks Island this Sunday, July 1, where participants will tour Fort Andrews and the surrounding area to learn about the island’s vast history and natural resources.

Peddocks Island—one of Boston Harbor’s largest—has one of the most interesting and varied histories of all the islands. Home to the earliest skeleton in New England (it was 4100 years old when it was found in the 1960s!), the island was also the backdrop for Revolutionary War action, and has been home to Portuguese fishermen, Italian P.O.Ws, bootleggers, gamblers, and vacationing summer residents.

Graced with rocky beaches and sandy shoals, Peddocks Island features several pristine natural landscapes. The island can also take on a moody feeling, which may have been Hollywood’s inspiration for using it as the setting for many scenes in the blockbuster movie Shutter Island.

The tour with Christopher Klein will cover Peddocks’ history and will take a look at the recent changes to island, including the preservation and rehabilitation of Fort Andrews, a new visitor’s center, and the introduction of great new amenities for island-hoppers.

DETAILS (Updated with new timing information on 6/21)

Date: Sunday, July 1 (during Boston Harborfest)

Time: The walking tour will leave at 12:45 p.m. from the dock at Peddocks Island. To arrive in time for the walking tour, participants must catch the 11:30 a.m. ferry from Boston to Spectacle Island, and then on to Peddocks, where the ferry will arrive at 12:45.  The tour will begin when the Boston ferry arrives on Peddocks. (If you plan to leave from Hingham, please contact shelby@unionparkpress.com for details.)

Ferry Ticket details: Ferry tickets are available for pre-purchase through the Boston Preservation Alliance though Friday, June 29.  Participants’ names will be at the ticket booth on the dock at Long Wharf-North in Boston for will-call pick up. The Hingham Ferry leaves at 10:10 and arrives at Peddocks at 11:00.

Pre-Registration: To pre-register (and reserve a ferry ticket for 7/1), purchase a ticket through the Boston Preservation Alliance’s website. Pre-registration will be capped at 30 tour participants. Ferry tickets can also be bought the day of the event, but since it will be a busy holiday weekend, the ferries will very likely be sold out. If the tour should be cancelled due to inclement weather, participants will be able to use their ferry tickets on another day during the 2012 season.

Price: The tour itself is free—but you need to buy a ferry ticket to get yourself there! To buy a ferry ticket in advance for $15, visit the Boston Preservation Alliance’s website (www.bostonpreservation.org) or call 617-367-2458.

*SPECIAL OFFER! Purchase a ferry ticket and a copy of Discovering the Boston Harbor Islands: A Guide to the City’s Hidden Shores, by Christopher Klein: $27 (savings of $5). Click here to purchase this package deal.

For ferries departing from Hingham, or for more information about the walking tour, contact Shelby Larsson at shelby@unionparkpress.com or call 617-877-6525.

This event is co-hosted by the Boston Preservation Alliance and the Boston Harbor Island Alliance.
