History Panel at J.J. Foley’s a Huge Success!

shelby picLast night’s Drinking Boston panel at J.J. Foley’s was a raving success thanks to the South End Historical Society, Mt. Washington Bank, moderator (and Drinking Boston author) Stephanie Schorow, and panelists David Wedge and Jerry Foley himself! Mr. Foley is known for his preference to remain behind the scenes despite owning the oldest family-run bar in America, so it was a special treat to hear him open up about the bar’s past, as well as his family’s. We were also pleasantly surprised to see people live-tweeting the event using the hashtag #DrinkingBoston. If you missed out on the great conversation, here were some of our favorite highlights:

  • The fantastic turnout:

awesome turnout

  • This powerful quote by Stephanie Schorow:

history here in the bar

  • This equally powerful quote by panelist and former Herald journalist Dave Wedge:

good journalism is

  • This signed picture of Ted Williams in a police line-up (and the silly story that went along with it), taken by @heyratty:

  • This poignant memory of what was happening at J.J. Foley’s after the Marathon bombings from Foley’s manager Emma McEwen:

  • This regret about a missed opportunity:

Obama West Wing

  • Stephanie Schorow calling out Mr. Foley on his usually quiet demeanor:
    most youve talked

  • And lastly….

Will there be more of these

We hope so, Devin! In the meantime, we encourage everyone to keep tweeting using the hashtag #DrinkingBoston any time you’re in an iconic “Boston bar”, old or new.  Let’s keep last night’s great conversation going!

If you missed the panel but want to learn more about Boston’s complicated history with alcohol – and landmark neighborhood bars like J.J. Foley’s – grab a copy of Drinking Boston through our website; online through Amazon or Barnes & Noble; or pick up a copy at your favorite local bookstore – if they don’t have it in stock they’ll be happy to order it for you! Take @heyratty’s word for it:

great gift
