Get out of town: Activities and trips away from home

While we obviously love Boston, every once in a while it’s nice to grab the kids and escape the city. Below are three of our favorite easy-to-get-to family destinations!

Davis Farmland
Davis Farmland in Sterling, MA, is more than just a farm; it’s an experience. While kids will love petting hundreds of cute and cuddly animals, they will also be delighted by all of the other fun activities that the farm has to offer, like the large spray park with every type of geyser and mister possible (including a kiddie car wash!), a discovery museum in which kids can dig for dinosaur bones or take a spin on a pedal car track, an expansive playground, pony rides, and even a bouncy house.

The EcoTarium in Worcester, MA, is an indoor-outdoor nature museum that promises to enchant kids of all ages while also expanding their knowledge about the natural world. Inside, there are three floors of exhibits which teach children about anything (and everything!) related to nature, including a planetarium and the new, popular exhibit, Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body. Outside, there are a variety of animal exhibits—from frogs to river otters to Giant African Millipedes—and kids are even invited to touch some of these animals through the EcoTarium’s Animal Encounters program. Kids over seven can also test out their balance on the Tree Canopy Walkway, a series of platforms and rope bridges suspended in the trees forty feet above ground. If you have a little one who loves trains, be sure to board the Explorer Express Train, which costs an additional $3.

Story Land
Story Land in Glen, NH, is the perfect amusement park for the preschool crowd. That said, while preschoolers will probably appreciate the storybook-themed park the most, toddlers and even bigger kids will also be able to find plenty to do. And there’s more to the park than just rides; in the summer, there are tons of ongoing, interactive programs for kids, including a story book hour read by different story book characters, such as Winnie the Pooh and Curious George!
