Marcy had just completed her second sunrise circuit of the Chestnut Hill Reservoir when she saw them: Twelve cyclists in flowing black capes zooming down Beacon Street. Her initial thought was that they had something to do with the east-coast college quidditch craze—she had just graduated from Middlebury, so knew all about that—but she knew that college students never voluntarily get up at 5:30 am.
There must be something more to it; when she got home, she had her usual smoothie and made a phone call. But no one was home; maybe they went to the Boston Book Fair! She considered this possibility as she mulched the tulips.
And then her doorbell rang, and she actively decided to ignore it. She was not in the mood to deal with people. The doorbell rang three more times until she could no longer ignore it. She headed towards her mahogany door and peered through the peephole. And there they were: the cyclists in capes.
“Top of the morning to you!” one of them said to her. “I’m the spokeswoman for this group. We were all pumped up when we set out before dawn. But we’re a wee bit tired now. Could we trouble you for some tea, so we can get geared up again?”
She shut the door and turned on the lawn sprinkler.
