We all know that the Hub is home to many “firsts” — the first public park, the first public school, the first public library, the first subway system — but did you know that Boston is home to the nation’s oldest light station?  Boston Light, rising high on rocky Little Brewster Island, is a picture-perfect New England light house that has saved countless lives and has been an iconic monument for nearly three centuries.

Boston cannot claim that we have the oldest light house in the country — that honor belongs to Sandy Hook in New Jersey, which was built in 1763.  The  historic lighthouse you see today replaced the original Boston Light, which was burned down in the final days of the Revolutionary War. Though this lighthouse dates to 1783, there has been a light house in operation on Little Brewster since 1718.

To celebrate this great history, and extend all that summer fun into September, we’re giving away three pairs of tickets to the Boston Light Tour!

The Light Tour is a three-hour adventure, which includes a forty-five minute narrated boat tour of The Long Island Light and The Graves Light. The boat will dock at Little Brewster Island, where you can visit the Boston Light, the last to retain a U.S. Coast Guard keeper. If you’re lucky, the keeper, Sally Snowman, clad in a hand-sewn, eighteenth-century costume, will greet you as you arrive, and you’ll be able to explore Boston Light’s tower and see the historic Fresnel lens!

In addition to the Boston Light Tour tickets, winners will receive a copy of Discovering the Boston Harbor Islands and two ferry vouchers. Your copy of Discovering the Boston Harbor Islands will help you plan your Boston Light adventure and future trips o the Boston Harbor Islands.
